Ms. Lindsey Inserra
Lindsey graduated from New York University with a degree in Social Work and continued her family’s long-standing tradition of giving back to those in need. After being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age 11, Lindsey knew the importance of helping others as she found people’s kindness to be such a support. During the time that Lindsey was completing her degree at NYU, she worked at Bellevue Hospital in New York City and Hoboken University Medical Center in Hoboken, NJ in their respective social services departments. It was here that Lindsey found herself on the front line in the battle against food instability and hunger.
During this time Lindsey also identified the need to support those living with Type 1 Diabetes. She founded the organization ACT 1: Adults Coping with Type 1 Diabetes, a support network of adult Type 1 Diabetics. The group provides services such as support groups, meet-ups and an online community focused on supporting each other in a positive way. In the spirit of using her own experience with having diabetes, Lindsey turned a negative into a positive. Truly believing that if her experience could help another, she would devote her time to that cause.
Following graduation, Lindsey knew that her career choice would have to stay focused on furthering her experience gained while working in the social work field. She decided to go into the family grocery store business where she is committed to meeting the needs of others in a broader sense while merging all of her passions. Two years ago, Lindsey became the VP of Corporate Health and Wellness where she currently runs a team of eight registered retail dietitians. Her program encompasses her knowledge learned as a Type 1 Diabetic and her hope to bring healthy food and lifestyle changes to those who could otherwise not afford these services. Lindsey has found a way to improve her company’s community outreach and ability to provide support to the costumer in a new way that Inserra Supermarkets had been unable to achieve before. Lindsey also works with her company’s charitable donation department in addition to developing Inserra Supermarkets public relations team.
Currently, Lindsey serves as the Young Professional Chair of the Northeast Board of the Diabetes Research Institute, a cure focused diabetes organization that she has worked with for many years. In this role, she is working to cultivate the next generation of DRI supporters needed to raise the necessary funds to cure this disease.
Most recently Lindsey began working with Table to Table, an organization dedicated to delivering food to those who need it most. This organization embodies all that is most important to Lindsey. Utilizing her family business and all available resources, Lindsey is committed to supporting this worthy cause.
Lindsey is 30 years old and lives in Mahwah, NJ with her husband John Hughes and her two dogs.
